Sitori Tanin logged her third double-double, but Loyola (6-20, 1-12 A-10) dropped Wednesday night's contest against George Mason (13-14, 6-8 A-10) by a final score of 80-63 at Gentile Arena. Tanin finished with 16 points and tied her career-best rebound total with 12, while grabbing a career-high eight steals.
Maya Chandler (17 pts) and
Kira Chivers (10 pts) also scored in double figures.
How it Happened
Six different Ramblers scored in the opening period – which tied a season-high – as Loyola and George Mason went back and forth across the first 10 minutes of action. Back-to-back buckets from
Sam Galanopoulos and Tanin gave the Ramblers their first lead at 4-3, and a layup from
Mallory Ramage put Loyola ahead 14-13 with under two minutes. However, the visiting Patriots hit a three near the buzzer to claim a 20-16 advantage going to the second period.
A fastbreak layup by
Anna Brown tied the game at 22-22 with 8:39 in the second quarter, before George Mason responded with a 7-0 run to take command of the game. The Patriots would extend their lead to double digits with under two minutes, closing the first half shooting 55% overall to take a 13-point halftime lead, 41-28.
The visitors stayed hot in the third quarter, with 13 consecutive made field goals after closing the second quarter with five straight and opening the third period with eight consecutive makes. Loyola trailed by as much as 28 in the third quarter and tried to climb back with a strong 10-2 run to open the fourth. Chivers and Chandler buried back-to-back treys to trim the deficit to 72-55, but the Ramblers wouldn't get back within single digits the rest of the way.
