Â
How it Happened
Loyola jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match, but it didn't come easy as the host Flyers stormed out of the gate.
Â
In the opening set, the Ramblers were forced to overcome an early 6-1 deficit and didn't claim their first lead until
Cole Schlothauer's kill gave Loyola a 23-22 advantage. Lewis had led the entire set until the Ramblers rattled off four straight points to even the score at 17. From there it went back and forth the rest of the way as back-to-back kills from Schlothauer and Van Buren, who recorded seven kills in the first stanza, put the Ramblers up 1-0 in the match.
Â
Set 2 was all Loyola with the Ramblers quickly extending a one-point lead at 13-12 to a six-point advantage at 20-14, following a kill by
Nicodemus Meyer. Lewis got back within two at 21-19, but a couple attack errors from the Flyers put the Ramblers in position to clinch the second frame with an ace delivered by
Cooper Evans.
Â
The Flyers were able to avoid the sweep, limiting the Ramblers to a team hitting percentage of .115 in the third set. After the score was tied at 13 following another Van Buren kill, Lewis led the rest of the way and closed on a hot streak with seven of the set's final 10 points.
Â
The final set started off close with the score level at 8-8 following kill from Brooks, soon after a Mangun ace sparked the Ramblers as the lead swelled to 17-10 for the Maroon & Gold. Loyola led 20-16 on another kill from Brooks, but Lewis didn't go down without a final stand and pulled back within a point when back-to-back Loyola errors made it 23-22. A Lewis service error stopped the run and the match ended on the next rally with a huge block from
Jimmy Meinhart and Schlothauer.
Â
Christan Prayer led the Flyers with 16 kills while Max Roquet recorded 14 on the night.
