Loyola's Streak Snapped in Five-Set Defeat at Purdue Fort Wayne

Ramblers drop first MIVA match, remain in first place at 8-1

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (March 18, 2023)

In Short…
No. 9 Loyola (17-3, 8-1 MIVA) suffered its first conference loss and had its 10-match win streak snapped after coming up short against Purdue Fort Wayne (13-9, 4-4 MIVA) Saturday in five sets: 25-18, 27-25, 23-25, 20-25, 15-12.

Parker Van Buren and Cole Schlothauer each finished with 19 kills, while Matt Oakley gathered a career-high 16 digs to lead the Ramblers. PFW's Jon Diedrich recorded 19 kills to help the Mastodons snap a five-match losing streak.

Loyola has played five sets in three of its previous five matches, which includes both meetings with PFW. The Ramblers moved to 3-2 on the season in deciding sets.

How it Happened
Loyola led 2-1 at the start of the match but that would end up as the only lead in the opening set for the Ramblers. An ace from Dan Mangun tied the score at 11-11, before a pair of kills from Schlothauer and Van Buren kept things tied at 14-14. The Mastodons created separation with a quick 3-0 run which forced a Loyola timeout, and the Ramblers never recovered after hitting .107 in the opening stanza.

In the second set, Loyola built a four-point lead at 14-10 following a triple block but the Mastodons responded to even the score at 16-16. The teams would continue to go back and forth with Loyola regaining the lead at 22-21, before PFW went back in front 23-22. Jack Yentz put the Ramblers ahead 25-24 but the Mastodons held on for the win after posting the final three points  a 2-0 lead in the match.

Then, the Ramblers came out strong in the third set while producing a match-high .360 team hitting percentage. Jimmy Meinhart's third of four kills in the set put Loyola ahead by two at the media timeout, 15-13. The Mastodons strung together three points to take the lead after the stoppage, but a huge block from Meinhart and Mangun down the stretch gave the Ramblers set point at 24-22, with the match ending on a PFW serviing error.

In Set 4, neither team led by more than a point until PFW went ahead 12-10. The Ramblers found momentum after a kill from Nicodemus Meyer put Loyola ahead 14-13. Schlothauer's kill out of the media timeout put Loyola ahead 16-14, before a block from Meinhart and Van Buren made it a three-point advantage at 17-14. Then, five consecutive serving errors eventually put Loyola in front 20-17 as the Ramblers held on to force the deciding set.

After PFW took the first point, Loyola responded and took an 8-5 lead in the fifth set after an ace from Van Buren sparked the Maroon & Gold. However, after the switch it was all Mastodons as the home team used a 7-1 run to create distance. The Ramblers fought back to get within two points at 14-12, but couldn't pull off the reverse sweep for the second time in three matches.
