ST. LOUIS (April 19, 2023) – The Ramblers dropped a pair of games in a midweek A-10 doubleheader at Saint Louis. The Billikens got ahead early in both games routing themselves to a 5-2 and 8-2 win in both games.
Loyola falls to 17-21 overall and 11-6 in A-10 action.
Game One // Saint Louis 5, Loyola 2
The Billikens scored four unanswered runs to start game one of Wednesday's doubleheader. It was all they would need to capture the win before adding a fifth in the bottom of the sixth.
Etling provided a second inning spark for Saint Louis with a one-out double to left center. With two outs, Abbott singled to left advancing Etling who went on to score on a Loyola throwing error. Abbott wasted no time scoring on a Newbanks bunt in the next at-bat, and it was quickly 2-0 SLU.
The Ramblers gained their first base runner in the fourth when the Billikens walked
Madison Ebeling, while
Nova Sinskul tallied the first hit in the fifth. Both were stranded on base, while the Billikens prepped to add to more in the bottom of the fifth.
Rhine had an early walk and scored with Kowalik on a two-run single from Mallo. The Ramblers got out of the inning with a routine play following Mallo's single, but the Billikens led 4-0.
Loyola finally got on the board in the sixth inning. Three hits led to two runs cutting the deficit in half. Ebeling and
Hannah Nalley tallied two straight singles. Both runners would score later on a two-run double from
Haley Wallace.
Etling answered with a leadoff triple in the bottom of the sixth. She scored on a sac fly leading SLU to a 5-2 win.
Game Two // Saint Louis 8, Loyola 2
The Ramblers gave up three early runs in the first allowing the Billikens to jump ahead once again. Kowalik hit an RBI triple, while Mallo brought her home on a two-run bomb to left field for the lead.
Loyola's answer came in the fourth inning. Wallace singled up the middle, while Sinskul advanced her with a bunt to first base. Wallace capitalized on a fielding error during
Abbie Gregus' at-bat to score the first run. Sass plated Sinskul for a run on a single, before the inning ended with a play at third on Gregus. SLU led, 3-2.
The Billikens added three more to the board in the fifth inning. Rhine recorded another triple for SLU sending Abbott home for a 4-2 edge. Sullivan and Rhine would also score in the inning on a Rambler throwing error. SLU jumped out to a 6-2 lead.
The Ramblers tallied two more hits in the sixth, but they wouldn't get another base runner in the seventh. The Billikens scored two more in the bottom of the sixth and took an 8-2 win.
