CHICAGO – Loyola Chicago's
Bree Borum recorded her first-career triple-double Friday evening as the Ramblers dropped a pair of matches in the Hampton Inn Invitational.
Â
In Friday night's 3-0 setback to DePaul, Borum finished with a career-high 10 kills to go along with 30 assists and 10 digs to notch the triple-double. The setter was also a force defensively, ending the night with six assisted blocks.
Â
The Ramblers opened the day taking on fellow crosstown foe, UIC, and also fell by a 3-0 margin.
Emily Banitt led the way for Loyola in that match, finishing with 10 kills and four digs while
Addie Barnes set a career-high with seven service aces. The seven aces are tied for the second-most in a 3-set match among all NCAA Division I players this year.
Â
UIC 3, Loyola 0
One of Barnes' seven aces put Loyola up 14-11 in the opening set, prompting a UIC timeout. The stoppage in play didn't slow down Barnes, who served up a second ace immediately following the timeout to extend the lead to 15-11. The teams would trade points down the stretch, with 12 ties and six lead changes in the opening frame. Extra points were needed and UIC prevailed, 32-30 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Â
UIC used a 7-1 run early in the second set to go up 7-2 and would maintain the lead throughout, closing out the 25-19 victory and push the advantage to 2-0 heading into the break.
Â
The Ramblers used a 5-1 run to build an early 8-6 lead in the third set. Barnes served up another ace in the run while
Anna Feldkamp and Barnes each had a pair of kills during the scoring spree. A 3-0 Flames run would eventually give UIC a 15-12 advantage and the visitors would close out the set, and match, with a 25-19 victory in the third.
Â
DePaul 3, Loyola 0
The Ramblers and Blue Demons played three extremely close sets, with each set featuring tied scores late in the frame. Over the span of three sets, there were 30 ties and 18 lead changes between the two teams.
Â
Following a Loyola timeout,
Karlie McNabb connected from the outside before DePaul committed an error to tie the opening set at 20-all. DePaul would counter by scoring five of the final six points to pull away with the 25-21 victory.
Â
DePaul opened to an early 7-3 lead in the second set, but Loyola would rally to even the set up at 10-all following a kill from Feldkamp. Neither team would have a lead of more than two points for the rest of the set. Barnes gave the Ramblers set point following a kill and an ace to put Loyola in front, 24-23, but three-straight by DePaul gave the visitors the 26-24 decision and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Â
It was much of the same in the third set, as neither team led by more than two at any point in the final frame. Tied at 23-all, McNabb connected off the assist from Borum to give Loyola set point. Once again, it was a 3-0 DePaul run to end the set and claim the 26-24 victory.
Â
Loyola rounds out action in the Hampton Inn Invitational Saturday afternoon, taking on Yale at 4 p.m.
