CHICAGO (Sept. 30, 2023) – 647 fans witnessed an intense battle on Senior Day at Hoyne Field, but after a full 90 minutes of play, the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team fell, 2-1, to VCU.
Oscar Dueso scored in the 49
th minute for the Maroon and Gold, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Rams Saturday afternoon.
"Disappointing. We had 25 shots and they only had to make two saves," said Loyola head coach
Steve Bode. "We expect so much more in the attack in the final third, with execution and shots on-frame. If we take the shot or put the ball on-frame, we tie or win this game today. But we didn't have it. We didn't have that today, and we have to take that and move on and learn from it,"
How it Happened
Loyola Chicago (5-2-2, 1-1-1) was out-shooting VCU (2-4-4, 2-0-1), 15-4, in the first half, however, the Ramblers couldn't quite find the back of the net until the 49
th minute.
Julian Cisneros was fouled in the Rams' box, sending Dueso, one of the seven Loyola seniors, to attempt the penalty kick. Dueso sunk his shot to the bottom left side of the goal to give LUC the first lead of the match.
VCU quickly equalized just five minutes later, scoring off a corner kick. Scott McLeod of VCU headed the ball to the far corner of the net and past keeper
Aidan Crawford to knot the match, 1-1.
Eight minutes later in the 63
rd minute, the Rams struck again with the game-winner off another corner kick. This time, Moussa Ndiaye scored for the Rams, with his head, to lift VCU past Loyola.
The Ramblers didn't go down without a fight though as the squad sent off 10 more second half shots and forced John Ermini, the Rams' keeper, to make a pair of saves. However, none of the 'Blers attempts made it to the back of the net as Loyola Chicago fell, 2-1.
Notes
Up Next
The Ramblers are next in action this Wednesday (Oct. 4) as they take on La Salle. Kick off is set for noon CT in Philadelphia.
"We're 1-1-1 in A-10 play. So, we have four points, and every game is going to be very tight like this. I haven't looked around the league, haven't looked at results yet. But we're a league of ties half the time. We must dust this one off, put it behind us, learn from it, and get after it on Wednesday at La Salle."
