KINGSTON, R.I. – The Ramblers win their fourth consecutive match after completing a 3-0 sweep over the Rams Saturday. Loyola Chicago was led by freshman hitter
Kate Maley who recorded 11 kills on the day.
Loyola improves to 9-7 overall and 4-1 in Atlantic 10 play.
"I thought we served a lot tougher today which helped us set the tone for the match," said head coach
Amanda Berkley. "We also did a better job defensively of slowing down some of their hitters. I am proud of the team for playing more determined today."
Maley was one of two Ramblers in double-figures as teammate
Ann Marie Remmes added 10, while hitting .600 in the match. Maley added three blocks, while Remmes had two.
Borum recorded her eighth double-double of the year with 37 assists and 10 digs. She also had five kills, three aces and a block.
Avary DeBlieck tallied eight kills, while
Marta Cvitkovic and
Esma Ajanovic had six each. Cvitkovic recorded a team-best four aces.
How It Happened
Set One: Loyola's dominance from Friday carried over immediately into the first set of Saturday's action. Three different Ramblers scored in a 5-0 run, putting Loyola ahead 9-3. Loyola didn't let off the gas with a 10-1 run that was capped with a pair of Cvitkovic aces for a 20-6 dominant lead. Chloe Abuto sparked three unanswered for Rhode Island to break the Rambler hot streak, but Remmes heated up at the end to capture the 25-12 win for the Ramblers.
Set Two: DeBlieck and Maley opened the second with kills as Loyola took a 3-0 lead right off the bat. Remmes went for back-to-back kills, while Maley tallied an ace to make it 8-4. URI fought back with a 5-0 run, and Hayvn Rolle delivered an ace to knot the match at 10 all. The teams went back and forth until the match was tied 23-23 down the stretch. Borum gave the Ramblers an advantage with a late kill, and a Rams' attack error handed over set two to Loyola, 25-23.
Set Three: Rhode Island turned momentum in the third with an early 3-1 lead following an Abuto kill and Sydney Houchens kill, but Maley continued to put the Ramblers on her back with two of her own attacks to cap a 3-0 run for Loyola swinging the lead in the Ramblers favor. Loyola held on to the lead and built the gap to 16-11 on a 4-0 run highlighted by a kill from Remmes. Borum aced the Rams twice in a row setting up for match point. Cvitkovic would get final say with one last kill, 25-17.
