WASHINGTON – Loyola Chicago won its eighth straight match after downing George Washington on the road, 3-1.
Bree Borum eclipsed 1,000 career digs in the Maroon & Gold as she snagged her 19
th double-double of the season.
The Ramblers improved to 17-11 overall and 12-5 in A-10 play.
"I'm really proud of the team's effort tonight," said head coach
Amanda Berkley. "We new GW was going to be a solid match-up, but we really rallied in the fourth set to handle them and show what we're capable of. Proud of Bree for another milestone reached. She played great tonight."
Marta Cvitkovic tied for a match-high 18 kills. It also ties her season-high set earlier this season. She hit .455 on the night.
Avary DeBlieck added 12 kills, while
Ann Marie Remmes finished with seven.
Borum's double-double came off 42 assists and 13 digs.
Olivia Lovett (17),
Jordan Bruckner (11), and
Sam Falk (11) all tallied double-figure digs for the Ramblers.
How It Happened
Set One: The Ramblers and Revolutionaries went back and forth to start the set, but Loyola gained some separation with a 4-0 run. Cvitkovic had two kills, while Borum had an ace as the Ramblers jumped ahead, 8-4. GW got within two on a few occasions before cutting the lead to one on a 3-0 run, 16-15. Their effort paid off down the stretch with another four unanswered sparked by MC Daubendiek's kill. Salem Tohannes would cap the stretch with her own kills for a 21-20 GW lead. After one more tie by GW, Lovett and Cvitkovic stepped up on the attack, helping Loyola win, 25-23.
Set Two: Yohannes had three early kills for GW, leading the Revolutionaries to a 6-2 edge out of the gates. They went up 14-6 following a 4-0 run and neared a double-digit after Daubendiek led them to another four straight points, 18-9. Loyola didn't give up with two kills and a pair of GW errors, helping the Ramblers get back within five. The teams then traded 5-0 runs, but Yohannes delivered the final point, and GW evened the match, 25-20.
Set Three: Set three opened as another toe to toe battle. GW broke away after a 5-5 draw with five straight points. Loyola rallied to tie it 12-all with two kills from Remmes and Cvitkovic each and a Lovett ace. There were two more lead changes before Loyola regained control. DeBlieck, Ajanovic, and Lovett tallied three straight kills for a 21-17 edge. The Revolutionaries tied it two more times, but the Ramblers scored three of the last four points, all on Remmes kills to win, 25-23.
Set Four: Loyola jumped out to a 6-2 lead after Cvitkovic, Borum, and DeBlieck combined for four kills. The lead extended to double-digits following a 9-2 run capped by a Lovett kill to go up 16-6. The Ramblers kept the lead at 10 with another late kill from Lovett, 22-12. Remmes sealed the win with match point, 25-15.
