CHICAGO –
Sitori Tanin of the Loyola University Chicago women's basketball team became the 30
th Rambler in program history to eclipse 1,000 career points in Tuesday night's 55-45 loss to La Salle at Gentile Arena. The fifth-year led Loyola with 17 points and seven rebounds, marking two new season-highs.
"Incredibly disappointed in our performance tonight," said Loyola Chicago Head Coach
Allison Guth. "Credit to La Salle and I think Mountain's [La Salle Head Coach] doing a tremendous job. I think he's done a fabulous job getting people, who play hard, to want to win. I love what he's running with his system. They're doing some great things, so congratulations to them. But for me, I think this was the opposite of Rambler basketball and what we want to put out on the floor,"
How it Happened
For the third-straight contest,
Emma Theodorsson sank the Ramblers' (5-4, 0-1 A-10) first bucket of the game, but the Explorers (5-4, 1-0 A-10) used an 8-0 run to claim an 8-4 lead at the first media timeout. Loyola Chicago stopped the run as Tanin, with 5:44 left in the frame, connected on a second-chance layup and
Jess Finney scored a three-pointer a moment later. The two baskets cut the deficit to 8-7, La Salle. The Explorers capped off the first quarter with an 8-2 run, shooting 44-percent from the field and securing a 16-9 lead heading into the second quarter.
The 'Blers cut La Salle's advantage back down to six points (19-13) in the second frame after
Rosalie Mercille and
Thoranna Kika Hodge-Carr made driving layups at the 8:03 and 6:01 marks, respectively. The Ramblers crashed the glass with integrity, snagging 15 rebounds, seven of which were offensive, through the quarter. Finney made a driving layup to end the frame, making the score 15-19, Explorers, as the teams broke for the locker room.
The Ramblers had their best quarter shooting percentage (50-percent) in the third frame, making 7-of-14 shots from the floor. Tanin especially took over in the third quarter, scoring 11 points on five made buckets. She reached the 1,000-point milestone at the 4:48 mark, scoring a layup from Hode-Carr as the arena exploded in applause for the super senior. Tanin, in the zone, ignited LUC with her first three-pointer of the season, followed by another layup at the 3:03 mark, leveling the score at 35-35.
La Salle, however, carried a 14-0 run into the final frame which Loyola was unable to recover from. The Ramblers were limited to 3-of-12 shooting from the field in the final 10 minutes as Loyola fell, 55-45, to open Atlantic 10 play.
