CHICAGO – The Loyola University Chicago women's basketball team suffered a 77-68 defeat to Saint Louis on the road Wednesday night.
Sitori Tanin notched her sixth double-double of the season and
Alyssa Fisher scored 23 points in the loss. The Ramblers outscored the Billikens in the final two frames by four and six points, but it wasn't enough inside Chaifetz Arena. Â
"We had a battle in the third and fourth quarters that I was incredibly proud," said Loyola head coach
Allison Guth after the loss. "We scored 23 and 24 points, comparatively, in those quarters, but this game came down to giving up 27 points to SLU's aggressive offense in the second quarter."
How it Happened
Sam Galanopoulos scored the first basket of a tightly contested first quarter at the 8:12 mark.
Emma Nolan, making her second start of the season, followed with a second-chance layup to give the Ramblers a 4-3 lead two and a half minutes into the action. Loyola later built a 10-8 advantage after
Ali Berg's jumper and
Sitori Tanin's layup in the paint but that would be the last time LUC held the lead. Â
The Billikens started the second quarter on a 14-3 run, shooting the ball at a 65-percent clip from the field and 75-percent from beyond the arc. SLU ended the quarter on a 10-0 run, claiming a 40-21 lead heading into the locker room.
The Ramblers shot the ball at a 53-percent clip (eight-of-15) from the floor in the third quarter, but Saint Louis remained in front by 15 points (59-44) as the two teams got ready for the final 10 minutes of play.
Without a thought of backing down, Loyola Chicago cut their deficit down to 10 points (65-55) thanks in part to a 7-2 run which opened the fourth quarter. Then, Fisher was fouled beyond the arc while shooting with 2:42 left and sank all three free throws to make it a six-point affair (69-63). Fisher made two more at the line with under 30 seconds left, making it a seven-point game, but LUC was unable to complete the comeback and fell, 77-68.
