CHICAGO – Loyola Chicago has four former Ramblers in Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics. Two former men's volleyball student-athletes made the national team, while a former men's soccer player and track student-athlete serve as team doctors.
"We're extremely proud of our four former Rambler student-athletes who found their way to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris," said Loyola Chicago Athletic Director Steve Watson. "The four student-athletes embodied academic excellence and competitive success while wearing Maroon & Gold, and it's great to see what they accomplished here take them to the next level by representing our country."
Competing for gold medals in men's volleyball are former Ramblers Thomas Jaeschke ('22) and Jeff Jendryk ('18). This marks the third Olympic Games for Jaeschke, while Jendryk is making his debut.
While at Loyola, Jaeschke and Jendryk overlapped for one season in 2015 where the Ramblers won the National Championship. It marked the second straight title for Loyola and Jaeschke, who helped the Ramblers claim it in 2014.
Two more Loyola alums are in Paris contributing to the medical staffs of the USA men's soccer and women's gymnastics teams. Dr. Richard Gayle ('88) and Dr. Marcia Faustin ('07). Dr. Gayle competed for the men's soccer team, while Dr. Faustin was a member of track & field for the Ramblers.
Dr. Gayle serves as an orthopedic surgeon and is one of the team physicians. He assists in reviewing team protocols, action plans, injury scenarios, and helps keep everyone on the same page. At Loyola, Dr. Gayle was a member of the men's soccer team from 1985-86.
Serving the gymnastics squad is Dr. Faustin, who has helped restore USA women's gymnastics to what it is now and assisting Suni Lee and Simone Biles, as well as the rest of the team. Most recently, Dr. Faustin helped Lee navigate a kidney disease leading up to the summer games.
Dr. Faustin is a 2007 graduate of Loyola Chicago. While competing with the Rambler track & field squad, she won eight Horizon League high jump titles, set indoor and outdoor program records, a conference outdoor record, and was named the 2007 Loyola Chicago Female Scholar Athlete of the year. She was inducted into the Loyola Athletics Hall of Fame in 2023.
"Thomas and Jeff helped shape the modern-day era of Loyola's athletic success with back-to-back national championships on the men's volleyball team, while Richard and Marcia's academic foundation led them to being key team members on the medical staffs for their respective teams," continued Watson. "We can't wait to watch them all compete for gold and lead their teams to success."
