OMAHA, Neb. – The Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team ended the Jesuit Invitational Saturday afternoon, taking on Omaha on Caniglia Field. The Ramblers dropped the contest, 1-0, after being equal in shot attempts with the Mavericks. Loyola Chicago now turns its attention to its home opener against Wright State on Sept. 5.
"Credit to Omaha, who's an NCAA tournament team from last year. Very experienced and difficult team to play against," said Loyola head coach
Steve Bode. "I thought our best moments were in the first, probably 20 to 25 minutes of the game where we started on the front foot. We had a couple of good looks on-goal and I thought we could have maybe gotten one early based on the chances that were there for us, obviously we didn't. Omaha took advantage of a good opportunity and scored. In some ways, we ran out of gas a little bit. They are a tough team to play, and I don't think we were, overall, at our best, and I think we needed to be."
How it Happened
Noel Hansson recorded the Ramblers' (0-2-1) first attempt on-goal of the day in the eighth minute as he connected, with his head, on LUC's corner kick. His shot, however, was saved in the bottom right side of the goal.
Hugo Urdiales followed with a shot in the 19
th minute before
Jack McFeely, who scored in Thursday's match against Creighton, took a crack in the 23
rd minute, but neither passed the Omaha (4-0-0) keeper, Cole Stewart.
Later in the 40
th minute, the Mavericks broke the 0-0 deadlock with a goal.
Grant Bailey took Loyola Chicago's final shot of the half a few moments later but was unsuccessful in scoring as the two teams broke for the locker room.
In the final 45 minutes of play,
Luka Ivancic took a shot in the 66
th minute, but was off target. 10 minutes later,
Petar Janjic had a great opportunity on-goal after Urdiales fed him the ball in the box, but his touch was just mistimed as Stewart scooped up the ball.
McFeely had one last opportunity in the 90
th minute with a left-footed strike from outside of the box but his strike was saved as time expired.
Notes
- Loyola Chicago took 10 shots with three being on-target.
- Omaha had 10 shots as well with five being on-goal.
- Aidan Crawford played the full 90 and notched four saves.
- McFeely logged a career-best three shots with one landing on-target.
