CHICAGO – After an intense affair, the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team fell, 2-0, at UIC Thursday night. The Ramblers battled hard but couldn't overcome the Flames on their home field.
"I didn't think it was our best performance overall tonight," said Loyola Chicago Head Coach
Steve Bode. "In these inner city rivalry games, it's sometimes whoever grabs a hold of the game and gets that first goal makes a huge difference. I think about moments like when
Luka Ivancic had that shot on top of the box early on, before they got the set piece and scored, where, if that goes in, I think it could be entirely different game. You have to have a lot of things go your way when you're not at your best. We'll learn from it. We'll learn from it and bounce back for Tuesday."
How it Happened
Luka Ivancic, who scored two goals and an assist last time out against Wright State, recorded the matches' first shot. In the seventh minute, the freshman received the ball from
Noel Hansson in the box and took a one-time touch, but his shot was blocked.
UIC opened scoring in the 16
th minute, capitalizing off a free kick. Keeper
Aidan Crawford snuffed the first chance but couldn't stop the rebound as UIC took a 1-0 lead in the first half.
Hugo Urdiales had a crack in the 23
rd minute, taking a strong strike in attempt to level the match. His shot sailed high though as UIC stymied any further first-half chances from the Ramblers.
In the second half,
Matthew Andrusko fired shots in the 50th and 54th minutes, but neither found the back of the net. These attempts were the second and third of the season for the Brookfield, Wis., native.
The two Chicago squads continued to battle until the Flames extended their lead to 2-0 in the 69th minute. The home team capitalized off another second chance opportunity after Crawford's initial save fell to a UIC attacker.
Notes
- Loyola Chicago had five shots compared to UIC's 10.
- The former Horizon League foes racked up 26 fouls throughout the match.
- Loyola led in corners, 6-5.
