CHICAGO – On a hot and sunny Saturday afternoon on the North Side of Chicago, the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team drew with Dayton, 2-2, at Hoyne Field to open league play.
Grant Bailey and
Hugo Urdiales scored for the Maroon and Gold, helping Loyola Chicago earn its first point in Atlantic 10 Conference action.
"I think it was a classic, A-10 derby kind of game," said Loyola Head Coach
Steve Bode. We've played Dayton now four times since we've been in the A-10 and we've tied them every single time. I think Dayton is a contender to be the champion this year. They want it, and they went to the NCAA Tournament last year. So, to get a draw at home and preserve a conference point is big,"
How it Happened
Grant Bailey got the fun going early with a well-timed strike in the third minute of play. Following a chaotic sequence in the box - which included two Rambler shots - the sophomore defender found the ball with his chest and took a shot to the lower right-side of the net. The bouncing ball slipped past the Dayton keeper, and Loyola had an early 1-0 lead.
The Flyers leveled the match at 1-1 in the 17
th minute, but it didn't take long for the 'Blers to regain the lead as Urdiales scored his second goal wearing the Maroon and Gold in the 22
nd minute.
Julian Cisneros whipped the ball to
Benji Chavarria inside the box to begin the attack. Chavarria then shuffled the ball to Urdiales who did the rest.
With Loyola Chicago in control, 2-1, Dayton's last-ditch effort to tie the game succeeded in the 81
st minute as a defensive breakdown helped the Flyers knot the match.
Disaster nearly struck just a few moments later as Dayton was awarded a penalty kick with just minutes left in regulation. However, Loyola keeper
Aidan Crawford delivered a crucial save to his left, snuffing UD's chance at a come-from-behind win. Â
