CHICAGO – The Ramblers continued fall play, tying for fifth at the Zach Johnson Invite Tuesday afternoon at 14-over-par (288-282-296=866). Loyola Chicago men's golf squad was led by
Dori Lee who took second overall after finishing six under-par (67-66-74=207).
"We put ourselves in the mix again this week," said head coach
Erik Hoops. "It was a really fun first day and proved what we're capable of. Iowa State went and shot a great round today for their second win in a row. We knew we'd have to play our best golf today to get it done, and unfortunately, we just made some early mistakes and never got that momentum.
Lee's round of 66 set a new personal best round score. His three-round score of 207 also marked a new career-low.
"Dori was spectacular this week," continued Hoops. "When he left after last spring, he knew he needed to make some changes to his golf game to compete at this level. This week, it finally clicked in competition."
Competing as an individual in his Maroon & Gold debut was
Alex Rasmussen. He tied for 11th with a score just one over-par (75-68-71=214). He posted a career-low score of 68 in the second round.
"Alex finishing his first career tournament in that position was great as well," stated Hoops. "Our freshmen are giving us big, impactful scores this year, and it's been great to see them get adjusted to this level."
Zach Mulhearn also competed at a high level for the Ramblers, placing second on the team and tied 27th overall. Mulhearn once again posted a new personal best round score with a 69 in the first 18 holes. He totaled 219 (69-77-73) to complete the invite.
Charlie Kulwin finished one stroke behind Mulhearn with a score of 220 (75-70-75). He was tied 33rd in the event.
Loyola's team performances were wrapped with
Clay Heilman (77-72-74=223) and
Connor Woodin (79-74-76=229).
The Ramblers will have a week off before heading to the Throw Down Up Top hosted by South Dakota in Homer, Neb. Oct. 7-9)
"It's been a busy three weeks, but we like where we are as a team," finished Hoops. "Really looking forward to Landmand Golf Club in two weeks. It looks like a very special place that will give us some great memories, and hopefully have another opportunity to bring home a trophy."
