EAST LANSING, Mich. – Loyola Chicago women's volleyball posted its second straight sweep with a 3-0 win over Marist in the opening match of the Kathy DeBoer Invitational at Michigan State. The Ramblers held the Red Foxes to 18 or fewer points in all three sets.
"A lot of people were able to contribute to the win today, which was a great way to start the weekend," said head coach
Amanda Berkley. "We still have some things we need to improve on, but I'm happy with the service game today. We've got to rest tonight and prepare for a tough Western Kentucky squad tomorrow."
Loyola challenged at the net, blocking 15 attacks.
Esma Ajanovic had eight block assists, while
Chloe Morgan tallied six assists and a solo.
Anjanovic also let the Rambler attack with eight kills.
Kate Maley had six kills, eight digs, and three aces.
Bree Borum finished with a match-high 21 assists. She added six digs and two aces.
Jae Fitting added seven assists and 10 digs.
How It Happened
Set One: The Red Foxes jumped out 4-1 over the Ramblers in set one following an early kill from Taylor Miller and ace from Jamison White. Loyola took over the match scoring nine of the next 11 points. Maley tallied three of the points with a kill and two aces. Loyola continued to dominate with another 6-0 stretch, highlight by a pair of kills from Ajanovic and two aces by Borum for a 16-8 lead. Maley blew the lead open to 10 with a kill capping a 4-0 run, and the Ramblers held on to the gap, winning 25-15.
Set Two: Marist didn't falter to start the second set, putting up the first three points on two kills and an ace. The Ramblers forced two attack errors to tie the set, 5-5, and then gained their first lead of the set with back-to-back kills from
Ann Marie Remmes and
Marta Cvitkovic. Marist couldn't regain momentum as the Ramblers put another six unanswered points on the board with two kills each from Cvitkovic and Ajanovic, making it a 15-8 lead. The Ramblers held the Red Foxes at bay to claim set two, 25-17.
Set Three: Cvitkovic served an ace to open the third set, and the Ramblers didn't look back despite two early ties from Marist. Loyola began to pull away on a pair of kills from
Kaley Board that helped the Ramblers to a 18-13 edge. Loyola's final seven points of the match came off Marist error, and the Ramblers went on to win, 25-18.
