Rubin Double-Doubles in Loss to San Jose State

PALM SPRINGS – Miles Rubin recorded his first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds in Loyola Chicago's 63-51 loss to San Jose State. It marks the fifth double-double of his career. He added three blocks.

With the loss, Loyola falls to 1-7 overall.

How It Happened
Loyola jumped out ahead of San Jose State to start the first half. It was a quick 5-0 lead off a Rubin block that led down court to a Deywilk Tavarez dunk to set the pace. The lead grew to Loyola's largest yet after an 8-2 run by the 13:52 mark. Rubin put away an alley-oop dunk for a 13-4 edge.

Around the midway point, the Spartans hit back-to-back threes to get back within three of the Ramblers. Houinsou would help build it back up to nine on a three with just over seven to play, but SJSU hung around and chipped it back down to one with a 6-1 run by the 2:19 mark. Loyola would take a 31-29 lead into the halftime break.

The Ramblers left their spark in the first half as the Spartans came out on a 7-0 run. They opened the second with a three for their first lead of the game and never looked back. Houinsou, Chuck Love III, and Rubin got on the board early in the half, but SJSU pushed the lead to double-digits with six unanswered points in a two-minute stretch.

The Spartans kept their foot on the gas, going up by 16 at the 4:11 mark on a jumper off a Loyola turnover, 59-43. The Ramblers scored the next eight points, including back-to-back threes from Kayde Dotson to get the lead down to eight, but SJSU went 4-4 at the free throw line over the next minute and neither team scored in the final two. The Spartans win, 63-51.
