RICHMOND, Va. — Loyola Chicago showcased strong ball movement Wednesday night, recording 12 assists on 18 made field goals, but the Ramblers fell to Richmond, 69–46, in their Atlantic 10 opener.
"We knew this would be a tough test, but our first-half effort put us in a hole we couldn't climb out of," said Loyola Chicago Head Coach Allison Guth. "We didn't execute offensively, turned it over 20 times, shot 38-percent at the line and were out-rebounded 41–28 — that's a pride issue. We were better in the second half, and Alex-Anne Bessette was a bright spot with 15 points, but our standard has to be higher from the start as we move on to Western Michigan,".
How It Happened
Richmond (7-2, 1-0 A-10) opened the night on a 9–2 run and never trailed. Loyola struggled early and trailed 17–4 after the first quarter. The Spiders stretched the margin with a decisive 14-0 run late in the second period, taking a 35–10 lead into halftime.
Richmond built its largest lead at 44–13 early in the third before Loyola (2-6, 0-1 A-10) responded with a 5–0 run capped by an Alex-Anne Bessette three-pointer. The Ramblers outscored Richmond 14–13 in the quarter, trimming the deficit to 48–24. Loyola carried its momentum into the fourth, where it again edged the Spiders, 22–21, behind 61.5-percent shooting and three made threes.
Still, the early hole proved too deep. Richmond countered each Loyola push, maintaining control and closing out the 69–46 win.
