Ramblers Defeat Portland State Before Falling to No. 14 Oregon

Softball splits on day two of Oregon Classic

EUGENE, Ore. – Loyola Chicago (3-13) split on day two of the Oregon Classic, defeating Portland State, 3-2, for the Ramblers' third win of the season, before falling, 8-0, to No. 14 Oregon on Saturday, March 1.

"I'm proud of how we found a way to fight to get the win out of Portland state. While Oregon didn't go our way, we showed a lot of progress from all parts of our game," said head coach Alicia Abbott.

Game One: Loyola 3, Portland State 2
Behind a late rally in the fifth inning and strong pitching relief performance from Peyton Pepkowski, Loyola secured a 3-2 victory over Portland State. The Ramblers took an early, 1-0 lead, in the first inning after Sierra Sass walked then advanced on an error and eventually crossed home plate on Bella Crimaldi's groundout.

Loyola's offense stayed quiet until the fifth frame when Haley Wallace delivered a clutch two-run single to put the Ramblers back in the lead over the Vikings, who had pushed across two unearned runs in the top of the inning. In the circle, Maddy Hickey came out strong, allowing two unearned runs over 4.2 innings before Pepkowski took over. The veteran pitcher shut out Portland State for 2.1 innings to claim her first win of the season, striking out four batters and allowing just one hit.

Inside the Box Score

  • Wallace led Loyola's offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Sass scored twice and reached on base two times.
  • Freshman Alli Pawlowicz added one hit and one run.
  • Pepkowski improves to 1-10 on the season with an ERA of 7.10 through 45.1 innings pitched.
Game Two: Loyola 0, Oregon 8
Loyola struggled to find an offensive spark against No. 14 Oregon, falling 8-0 in six innings to the Ducks. Oregon set the tone early, plating four runs in the opening inning, capitalizing on aggressive base running and Loyola throwing errors. The Ducks extended their lead, 7-0, after a two-run homer in the fifth frame while the Ramblers managed just three hits against Oregon's pitching. Andie Broniewicz took the loss for Loyola, allowing seven runs, six earned, on seven hits over four innings. Hickey then provided 1.2 innings of relief, surrendering one run off two hits.

Inside the Box Score

  • Crimaldi led the Ramblers with two hits while Sass added one.
  • Hickey recorded two strikeouts from inside the circle and Broniewicz had one, who improves to 2-2 on the season.
