Alli Pawlowicz Nails Grand Slam in Walk-Off Win

CHICAGO – In front of a rowdy Ramblers crowd on an overcast morning, Loyola Chicago (9-24, 4-5 A-10) run-ruled Rhode Island, 10-2, on Sunday, March 30 at Loyola Softball Park thanks to freshman Alli Pawlowicz's walk-off grand slam. The Ramblers secured their first Atlantic 10 conference series sweep with the victory.

"It was really nice for Alli, who's been kind of putting that together, she's been doing that all week in practice, so it was nice to see her actually be able to execute that in a game," said head coach Alicia Abbott. "From a pitching perspective, Pep [Peyton Pepkowski], Andie [Broniewicz] and Maddy [Hickey] really stepped up in a big way this weekend to get strikes and I think that was the biggest difference, less walks, more execution in that circle. Then the defense played really crisp behind them and did a good job of shutting them down when we needed it to. I think there were multiple times we forced lead outs, and we did exactly what we needed to to get out of the inning and get the win."

How It Happened
Loyola struck first in the bottom of the opening frame with Riley Owens tripling to right center and later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Haley Wallace. Rhode Island quickly responded in the top of the second with a two-run single to take a brief 2-1 lead. The Ramblers were rolling in the third inning. After Wallace singled and Nat Lesnicki doubled, Maddy Hickey delivered an RBI single then moments later Skyler Croker cleared the bases with a three-run double to reclaim Loyola's lead at 5-2.

After a scoreless fourth frame, the Ramblers' offense exploded in the fifth with Lesnicki singling to start the rally, and pinch-runner Katie Mitchell moving into scoring position. Hickey reached first after being hit by a pitch then advanced on Croker's RBI single. With the bases loaded and zero outs, Pawlowicz crushed a grand slam to right field, sealing the run-rule victory in walk-off fashion.
