Edwards Jr.'s Career-Night Leads Ramblers Past Wildcats

CHICAGO – Sheldon Edwards Jr. broke the single-season three-pointers made record with his third made three of the night, helping Loyola Chicago down Davidson 82-72 Wednesday night. Edwards Jr. finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double in the Maroon & Gold.

With the win, Loyola sits at 20-10 overall and 11-6 in A-10 play. This marks the third 20-win season under Drew Valentine and seventh overall since he came to Rogers Park. Loyola's 16 home wins is also the most since the 1965-66 season.

"It was an awesome night for our program," said Valentine. "Sustained success is the hardest thing to do in sports and the success we've had year after year speaks to our culture and how much this place means to the guys that are here. For Sheldon to do what he did tonight with his whole family in Gentile for the first time since he's been here was just so special. I am happy we could give that to him."

How It Happened
Edwards Jr. was on a mission out of the jump ball, going 4-4 from three-point range in the opening five minutes. He drained his first less than two minutes in, broke the record at the 15:21 mark and then hit a second straight on the next possession to put the Ramblers up 19-6. Loyola led by as much as 15 on a dunk by Miles Rubin.

The Ramblers maintained a double-digit lead through the mid-way point and got it back to 13 by the 6:03 mark after four straight points by Kymany Houinsou. The Wildcats didn't give up and held the Ramblers scoreless for over six minutes, using a 14-0 run to take a 35-34 lead. Houinsou had a three-point play to put Loyola up two, but Davidson's Connor Kochera tied it 37-all at the break.

Houinsou put the Ramblers on his back to start the second, scoring the first eight and dropping 12 by the 14:59 mark. His second chance slam put the Ramblers up seven, while Jayden Dawson and Des Watson scored back-to-back for a 12-point edge.

Dawson would connect again from three to give Loyola its largest lead yet at 19 with 9:50 to play. The Wildcats tried to find a late game rally with 13 points in the final 4:10 of play, but a Rubin alley-oop and Edwards Jr. three kept Loyola ahead for the win, 82-72.
