HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Loyola Chicago (3-17, 0-0 A-10) stumbled on day one at the Marshall March Madness tournament, falling 5-4 to Valparaiso in the first game before stumbling 9-1 against Marshall on Friday, March 7.
Game One: Loyola 4, Valparaiso 5
Loyola jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning, with Haley Wallace, Riley Owens, and Nat Lesnicki each driving in one run. However, Valparaiso responded in the bottom half with a three-run homer from Mack Gallagher to tie the game, 3-3.
Wallace continued to fuel the offense, tripling in the third inning and scoring on an RBI groundout from freshman Ali Pawlowicz to give the Ramblers a brief 4-3 lead. Then Valparaiso plated two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Despite late opportunities from the Ramblers, they couldn't push past Beacons' pitching. Peyton Pepkowski took the loss for Loyola, but gave a complete-game effort, striking out four batters while allowing five runs on five hits.

Game Two: Loyola 1, Marshall 9
The Ramblers struggled to contain Marshall's offense in the second game of the doubleheader, as the Thundering Herd launched four home runs in their 9-1 run-rule victory. Marshall's offense erupted in the third inning, plating six runs, including back-to-back homers, and a three-run blast to cap off the frame.
The Ramblers got their lone run on the board in the fourth when Pawlowicz doubled and later scored on a fielder's choice, but Marshall quickly added three more runs in the fifth, with the Thundering Herd's Chandler Hoskins launching a two-run homer to secure the walk-off win. Andie Broniewicz took the loss for Loyola, allowing five earned runs through 2.2 innings.
