HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Loyola Chicago wrapped up its nonconference tournament slate with a 13-5 loss to Marshall on Sunday, March 9. The Ramblers are now 4-19 heading into league play next weekend.
"As we start a new season, we need to bring what we learned from our failures and successes with us to go out and win. We saw flashes and moments of our potential and need to continue to fight for little wins when we can get them," said head coach
Alicia Abbott.
How It Happened
Loyola's final game at the Marshall March Madness tournament started off with both teams scoreless in the first inning, but then Marshall struck first in the second with one run. The Ramblers responded with a four-run third inning for a brief 4-1 lead. The Thundering Herd's offense surged after the third, scoring each of the next four innings, highlighted by a decisive four-run fifth frame.
Haley Wallace provided a bright spot for Loyola, going 3-for-3 with a double and one RBI while
Bella Crimaldi and
Maddy Hickey also added clutch RBIs, but it wasn't enough to keep pace with Marshall's consistent hitting and scoring. Pitching struggles hurt the Ramblers as
Peyton Pepkowski took the loss, allowing 10 runs, nine earned, over 4.2 innings. Marshall's pitching tandem of Lindsay Henson and Paige Maynard held Loyola to just five runs through six innings.
