SPRINGBORO, Ohio – Loyola Chicago men's golf concluded its regular season play at the Wright State Invitational Monday afternoon. The Ramblers finished sixth in the field of 12 with an even score of 852 (281-285-286).
It marks the best finish to par this spring.
"Honestly I'm still encouraged by this week. We made more than enough birdies and eagles to give us a shot, but we just made a few too many errors to move up a bit higher on the board," said head coach
Erik Hoops. "This week was unique given the condition of the course- no fault at all of the course, they received 6.5-7 inches of rain this past week. There was a point where I wasn't even sure we would be having this event. We had to play lift clean and place everywhere and most bunkers were unplayable. It took away one of our team's greatest strengths, the ability to get out of trouble where most teams would not. That advantage was negated a bit this week."
Loyola landed three golfers in the top-25.
Zach Mulhearn led the team tied for 14
th, while
Ryan Walsh and
Charlie Kulwin tied for 21
st.
"A great week from Zach, Charlie, and Ryan with top-25s is a good sign. Overall, we wrap up the year with a group of individuals with some near record-breaking seasons, and a team scoring average as good as I've had in my tenure."
Mulhearn scored 211 (69-70-72) over the three rounds. Both his first two rounds fell under-par.
Walsh and Kulwin finished at 213 through the 54-holes. Walsh improved every round (73-71-69), while Kulwin started and ended with under-par rounds (68-75-70). Both Kulwin (12) and Walsh (10) finished with double-digit birdies.
The final score to count for the Ramblers was
Sebastian Kasun's 218 (72-71-75). He tied for 44
th on the leaderboards.
Dori Lee and
Connor Woodin wrapped up the team play. Lee tied 62
nd with a score of 222 (74-73-75), and Woodin came in tied for 71
st at 225 (72-76-77). Lee picked up a pair of eagles.
Loyola turns its attention to the Atlantic 10 Championships slated for later this month. The Ramblers will compete in Orlando for the title on April 22-24.
"It's pretty simple, conference championships aren't given, they're earned," continued Hoops. "We know when we play our best golf and have all five guys clicking, we can beat anyone we tee it up against. We'll have a great couple of days in Florida getting prepped for A-10s on Bermuda grass. I feel great about where we are tee to green right now. Excited to get down to Evermore to give it our best go."
