Ramblers Secure Series Sweep with 12-3 Defeat Over Minutewomen

Four Ramblers record doubles and two rookies mark career highs.

AMHERST, Mass. — Loyola Chicago (15-30, 10-10 A-10) capped off a successful road trip with a series sweep against Massachusetts on Saturday, April 19 after a dominant 12-3 victory in the finale. With the win, the Ramblers secured their third Atlantic 10 series sweep of the season and are now leveled 10-10 in league play.

"I'm really proud of the way our team showed up today. We talked about playing with energy and executing in the big moments, and that's exactly what we did across the whole weekend," said head coach Alicia Abbott. "It's always tough to win on the road and take a series sweep, but our team stayed composed and competitive from the first pitch. This is the kind of momentum we want to carry into the final stretch of the season."

How It Happened
Loyola exploded with 12 runs on 14 hits in the series closer, breaking the game open with a six-run seventh inning to put it out of reach for UMass. After three scoreless innings, the Ramblers took control in the fourth frame with a three-run burst when rookie Averi Vander Woude singled allowing Sierra Sass to score. Moments later senior Haley Wallace launched a double to left center, sending Riley Owens and Abby Johnson home. Loyola added three more runs in the fifth with Alli Pawlowicz, Katie Mitchell and Sass plating the runs.

In the final frame, Vander Woude delivered another RBI, scoring Sass, and marked a career high of three then Johnson, another freshman, blasted a clutch three-run double to record her own career high which scored Vander Woude, Skyler Croker and Nat Lesnicki. Senior pitcher Peyton Pepkowski (8-19) picked up her eighth win of the season, tossing a solid six innings and allowing just one run on three hits while retiring five batters. Maddy Hickey came in for relief to close out the game, allowing two earned runs on three hits.
