HEUSDEN-ZOLDER, BELGIUM — Loyola University Chicago distance standout Jason Clayton made program history on Saturday, breaking the school's outdoor 5,000-meter record with a time of 13:26.94 at the prestigious Night of Athletics meet.
Clayton's performance erased a long-standing mark of 13:45.88 set by Jim Westphal in 1992, slicing an impressive 19 seconds off the 32-year-old record. Competing against a deep international field, Clayton finished second in his heat.
Over the past three weeks, Clayton has tallied three personal bests and two school records, running 3:40 in the 1500m (UK), 7:53Â in the 3000m (Ireland), and his record-breaking 13:26 in the 5000m (Belgium).
