Loyola Stumbles vs. Butler

CORALVILLE, Iowa - The Loyola Chicago volleyball team totaled 10.5 blocks in a 3-0 (24-26, 22-25, 16-25) loss to the Butler Bulldogs Friday afternoon in their second match of the Kiwi Star Classic.

The non-conference loss dropped Loyola to 2-3 on the season.

Leyna Nguyen finished with nine kills on the day to lead the Ramblers offense.Sam Falk had 15 digs along with five blocks from Avary DeBlieck to lead them defensively.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Ramblers fell in a close first set, losing 26-24 in a game that was tied four times and had two lead changes. Kaitlyn Burke, DeBlieck, and Nguyen led a balanced attack with three kills each.

SET 2 | Loyola then dropped set two 25-22 to fall behind in the match two sets to none. Butler grabbed the advantage for good at 20-19 in a set that was knotted up 10 times before the Bulldogs took over in the second half of the stanza. Nguyen had four kills, while Ann Marie Remmes dealt two aces.

SET 3 | Butler finished off the sweep with a third-set victory. The Ramblers fell behind on the first point and never clawed back into the lead before falling in the set 25-16. Burke, Remmes and Kate Maley tried to keep the Ramblers in the mix with three kills each, but the Bulldogs held the edge.

Game Notes

  • Remmes had a team-high two aces in the loss.
  • Loyola'a front row did a great job defensively, picking up 10.5 blocks in the match.
  • Nguyen had a team-high nine kills for Loyola Chicago.
  • Loyola had a team-high 15 digs from Sam Falk.
  • Loyola attackers were helped by a team-high 21 assists from Ava Hunter.
