CHICAGO - The Loyola Chicago women's basketball team erased a nine-point deficit entering the fourth quarter and pulled away late for a 64-60 victory over La Salle on Wednesday at Gentile Arena.
The Ramblers (8-11, 4-4 Atlantic 10) trailed 49-40 after three quarters before clamping down defensively and outscoring the Explorers (10-9, 3-5 Atlantic 10) 24-11 in the final 10 minutes to secure the comeback.
"Our coaching staff is really proud of the team," said Loyola Chicago Head Coach
Allison Guth. "We've had some Jekyll-and-Hyde quarters and are still working to find consistency, but they continue to find ways to get it done. That's the most important thing, and their fourth-quarter performance was fantastic."
Alex-Anne Bessette led Loyola with 18 points and two steals.
Alexus Mobley added 13 points, six rebounds and three steals, while
Alexa Kinas contributed seven points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Loyola shot 47.9 percent from the field (23 of 48) and assisted on 17 of its 23 made baskets. Kinas paced the Ramblers in ball distribution, while
Brooklyn Vaughn added three assists.
Defensively, Loyola forced 20 La Salle turnovers and converted them into 25 points. The Ramblers held the Explorers scoreless for the first 3:19 of the fourth quarter and limited La Salle to 3-of-13 shooting in the final period.
How it Happened
After falling behind 4-0, Loyola responded with a 6-0 run midway through the first quarter and carried a 16-10 lead into the second. The Ramblers scored 10 of their 16 first-quarter points in the paint.
La Salle answered with a strong second quarter, taking a 32-29 lead into halftime before extending the advantage to nine by the end of the third. Loyola's bench provided a lift during the period, accounting for four of the team's 11 third-quarter points.
The Ramblers opened the fourth quarter with a decisive 9-0 run, capped by a Bessette layup, to tie the game at 49 with 6:41 remaining. The Ramblers closed out the win at the free-throw line.
