Loyola Chicago Falls Despite Defensive Effort Against George Mason

Ramblers limit Patriots from 3-point range but come up short, 67-55

CHICAGO - Loyola Chicago's defensive effort was not enough Wednesday night, as the Ramblers fell 67-55 to George Mason at home despite holding the Patriots to just 13.3 percent shooting from 3-point range.

"I thought we played better for longer stretches in this game against George Mason than we did when we played them at their place," said Loyola Chicago Head Coach Allison Guth. "I liked some of our adjustments, and I thought our team was locked in defensively and played really hard, because George Mason is so talented and can score in a lot of ways. If you really look at the fourth quarter, we gave up 22 points, and half of those were from the free-throw line. We've got to play clean and be sharp in that area."

Loyola (12-14, 8-7 Atlantic 10) placed two players in double figures, led by Alex-Anne Bessette, who scored 15 points. Alexus Mobley added 12 points, eight rebounds and two blocks, while Alexa Kinas finished with eight points and three steals.

The Ramblers forced 15 turnovers and converted them into 18 points. Kinas led Loyola with three steals as the Ramblers limited George Mason to 2-for-15 shooting from beyond the arc.

How it Happened
Loyola trailed 16-11 late in the first quarter before closing on a 5-0 run, capped by a basket from Kinas with 33 seconds remaining to tie the game at 16. The Ramblers scored 14 of their 16 first-quarter points in the paint.

George Mason edged ahead in the second quarter and took a 27-25 lead into halftime.

The Patriots extended their advantage to 43-34 midway through the third before Loyola responded with a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 43-39 with 55 seconds left in the quarter. George Mason answered and carried a 45-39 lead into the fourth.

Loyola could not get closer in the final period as the Patriots pulled away for the 67-55 victory. The Ramblers scored 10 of their 16 fourth-quarter points in the paint.
