Ramblers Come Up Short in Series Closer

CHICAGO -- Loyola Chicago fell short, 2-1, in the series closer against St. Bonaventure on Sunday, March 29. Junior pitcher Brooke Steinhorst (2-7) took the loss for the Ramblers, who are now 14-18 overall and 6-3 in Atlantic 10. Junior utility Maddy Hickey started inside the circle and went three shutout innings while allowing two hits and striking out one.

Coach Quote: Alicia Abbott
"We had eight hits in yesterday's second game, but off of this pitcher in the first game, we only had four or five. We needed to put the ball in gaps more, and we hit a ton of ground balls today and got pretty easy outs. Our defense did a good job of handling each ball we hit to them; our offense just didn't put enough good quality balls in play to score runs."

"Anytime you can take a series, it's a wonderful thing, and taking them at home is even better. Looking ahead at DePaul and St. Joe's, we need to utilize all of our tools, 'who can we throw against them?,' 'who will be the best matchup?,' and use it almost as practice for the weekend because we need to ramp up for St. Joe's."

How It Happened
The Ramblers were trailing 2-0 in the fifth inning when they put their sole run on the board thanks to freshman pinch runner Alexis Hansen. Loyola was unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again.

Inside the Box Score

  • Redshirt junior catcher Abbie Gregus led the Ramblers at the plate, going 1-for-2 with her fourth double of the season.
  • Sophomore outfielder Averi Vander Woude is on a three-game hit streak after the weekend.
  • Rookie outfielder Mackenzie Patterson recorded her fifth career hit and is also on a three-game hitting streak.
