Ramblers Fall to Cyclones in Straight Sets

AMES, Iowa -- Loyola Chicago fell in its season-opening match at Iowa State, 3-0, on Friday, Aug. 28 at the Cyclone Invitational. Sophomore Leyna Nguyen led the Ramblers' attack with nine kills while junior libero Jae Fitting led defensively with nine digs. 

Junior middle Mallory Bohl had a standout performance in her debut match for Loyola, recording seven kills on .462 hitting and two block assists.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Ramblers fell behind early, dropping a tough first set 25-12, trailing as many as 14 points. Loyola managed five kills and one total team block in the opening frame.

SET 2 | Loyola took the opening point in set two before Iowa State took the advantage for good at 3-2. Nguyen led the way for the Ramblers with three kills and two digs while Bohl and senior middle Avary DeBlieck each had a solo block. 

SET 3 | In the final set, Loyola fought back from an eight-point deficit at 23-15, led by Bohl and Nguyen with five kills apiece. The host team hung on to win 25-22. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Junior libero Sam Falk had the match-high three ace.
  • Senior setter Emma Henry helped Loyola's attackers with 13 assists.
  • Alongside Bohl, junior Mya Ball and sophomore Katie Scherer made their debuts in Maroon and Gold.
