Frank Hanes joins the 2019 men's volleyball coaching staff for his first season with the program. The Orland Park, Ill. native will work under head coach
Mark Hulse as the volunteer assistant coach.
"We are very excited to have Frank on board," Hulse said. "He has been eager to learn and brings unique experiences from a variety of levels in the sport, which we think will translate to some different perspectives in our gym."
Hanes is fresh off a successful stint as an assistant coach at Marshalltown Community College in Marshalltown, Iowa. His guidance on staff propelled the Tigers to a 34-5 record, including 28 straight-set victories and a six-match winning streak to close out the season.
As a player, Hanes competed with and against nationally competitive teams as an outside hitter. He spent three years with the DI Volleyball Club in Morton Grove, Ill. before finishing his high school years with Ultimate Volleyball Club. In his one season with Ultimate (2014), Hanes helped guide the team to 10
th in the nation as well as an eighth place finish at U18 Beach Nationals that same year.
His standout season in 2014 also included a stint with the USAV High Performance A2 team that provided the opportunity to train with the Junior Olympic Team.
A 2018 graduate of Iowa State University, Hanes got his coaching career started early while in undergrad, working with the Iowa Heart Girls Volleyball Club. His tenure with the Heart VBC was highlighted by a Silver Bracket Championship at the Asics National Championships. His primary focus was the Head Coach for the 15 and 17 year olds while assisting with the 16-year old's team.
During his time in Ames, Hanes also mixed in extra coaching experience working as the practice coordinator for the club team at Iowa State, while also engaged as a practice player with the varsity women's team.
Has one brother, Jake, who is a current standout on the Ohio State men's volleyball team.
