A veteran coach with over a decade of experience at multiple levels, Nicole "Colie" Shelwick is set to begin her first season with the Loyola University Chicago women's basketball program in 2021-22. Shelwick, who arrives in Rogers Park following a four-year stint as head coach at IU Kokomo, will serve as an assistant coach.
“We are thrilled Colie is joining us in Chicago,” Loyola head women's basketball coach Kate Achter said. “I’ve known Colie for a number of years and her reputation has always preceded her.”
During her time IU Kokomo, Shelwick amassed a 54-41 record (.568), guiding the Cougars to a River States Conference (RSC) West Division title in 2018-19, two postseason appearances, and a pair of wins over nationally ranked opponents. She oversaw the development of seven All-RSC selections, including National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) All-American Deja Felder. Shelwick’s team also excelled in the classroom, posting a perfect graduation rate in addition to a 93 percent retention mark.
Prior to taking over at IU Kokomo, Shelwick served as head coach at Massasoit Community College in Brockton, Mass. for the 2016-17 season, guiding the Warriors to an 11-11 overall mark, a runner-up finish in the Massachusetts Community College Athletic Conference (MCCAC) Tournament, and an appearance in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 21 semifinals.
A two-sport athlete during her collegiate years at Belhaven University in Jackson, Miss., Shelwick has also made coaching stops at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, Central Methodist University, Burlington Community College, Pemberton Township High School, and on the club level with the S.J. Boro Blitz (N.J).
Shelwick, who graduated from Belhaven University prior to earning a graduate degree in athletic administration from Central Methodist University, will be joined in Chicago by her husband, Jerrod, and her sons, Jacobi (2) and Jacori (1).
“I have been in this business for over a decade and this opportunity is a dream come true,” Shelwick commented. “Coach Achter’s work ethic is unmatched and her vision for this program is resolute! I am ready to support her, the staff, and our players in their goals while representing Loyola. I’m thankful to join the Rambler family. Go Ramblers!”
“Colie shares our program values and will bring a ton of energy to our experienced team,” Achter continued. “I am looking forward to watching her build relationships not only with our players, but also with recruits. Her passion is contagious and it’s easy to see why she has been a winner everywhere she has been. We are also very excited to welcome Colie, Jerrod, Jacobi, and Jacori to our Rambler family!”
