Dave Brown, will begin his third season as associate head coach at Loyola University Chicago in 2020 after spending the previous four seasons on the staff at the University of Southern Mississippi. A native of Muskego, Wisconsin, Brown spent the 2017 campaign as associate head coach at Southern Miss under current Loyola head coach Amanda Berkley.
“Dave is a great recruiter, trainer and, more importantly, person,” Berkley said. “He is an asset to the Loyola women’s volleyball program and will do great things here.”
Last fall, the Ramblers put together one of their most successful seasons in over a decade, as they established a single-season program record for conference wins, regardless of league affiliation, by going 14-4 in Missouri Valley Conference action, en route to a second-place finish, the program’s best since joining the league. Loyola, which was picked fifth in the league’s preseason poll, closed out the season with 21 wins, its most since 2004.
Outside hitter Addie Barnes was tabbed MVC Freshman of the Year, becoming the first Rambler ever to receive that honor. In addition, Barnes and fellow rookie Taylor Venuto garnered First Team All-MVC and MVC All-Freshman Team recognition, while Heather Kocken collected Second Team All-MVC designation. Loyola notched its first win over local rival Northwestern since 2008 when it outlasted the Wildcats in five sets.
Off the court, Maddy Moser became the first Loyola volleyball player ever to be hailed as the MVC Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and the libero also closed out her illustrious tenure in Maroon and Gold ranked third on the school’s career digs list with 1,706 digs.
In 2018, Brown’s steadying influence helped the Ramblers win eight of their first 11 matches and close out the year with a winning record for the first time since 2015, while also being one of only 18 NCAA Division I programs to boast at least a 10-game improvement in the win column from 2017. Senior Gabi Maciagowski capped an impressive career by notching her 1,000th career kill and ended her time in a Rambler uniform ranked 10thon Loyola’s all-time chart with 1,104 stops. Loyola sat atop the Missouri Valley Conference in blocks with 2.40 per set, its most in a single season since 2007, and off the court, seniors Alex Nunez and Morgan Gresham were named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team.
Brown was one of 11 NCAA Division I women’s coaches to receive a Thirty Under 30 Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) in 2018 as one of the up-and-coming young coaches in the sport.
During his four seasons on Berkley’s staff at Southern Miss, Brown helped the Golden Eagles to four 20-win campaigns, including a 20-12 mark in 2017, and served as the program’s recruiting coordinator. He recruited the 2016 Conference USA Freshman of the Year (Catherine Repsher) and developed the 2014 and 2015 C-USA Libero of the Year (Mary Pursell).
Prior to his stint at Southern Miss, Brown spent a year as a volunteer assistant coach at UC Santa Barbara, playing a key role in the Gauchos winning the 2013 Big West Conference Tournament title and earning a NCAA Tournament bid for the first time since 2009. He was awarded the 2013 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Coaches 4 Coaches Scholarship.
Brown was a player and coach for five seasons for the University of Wisconsin men’s club volleyball team, where he oversaw all aspects of the program. He has served as head coach of the Capital Volleyball Academy for the 16 Red, 17 Red and 16 Navy teams also spent three seasons as girls volleyball coach at Oregon High School in Oregon, Wisconsin, leading the program to an 85-29 record.
He is a 2013 graduate of the University of Wisconsin.
