Chicago, Ill. (October 16, 2004) - At the Chili Pepper Cross Invitational this afternoon the Loyola men's cross country team grabbed fifth place while the women finished in eighth place.
Sam Romanoski completed the course in 30:51.9 for a team-high 31st place with Shawn Lucas (30:56.7) close behind in 34th place. Junior Andy Sbertoli grabbed 50th place with a time of 31:26.1 and sophomore Brent Cunningham nabbed 54th place in 31:29.4. Andrew McQuillan (31:34.4), Eduardo Borjon (31:35.8) and Justin Motkowicz (32:11.1) rounded out a strong finish to help the Ramblers to a fifth place finish out of 35 teams.
"We ran a strong team race today - Romanoski and Lucas put themselves in very good position early and battled to build from there. Now we need our 3-7 guys to close the gap to Romanoski/Lucas and we will be a pretty good team. I am excited about our progress over the last month and we have four more weeks to be where we want to be at the NCAA Region V meet," said head coach Marc Burns.
Maureeca Lambert again took the top finish of 25th place for the women's team after finishing the 6k in 21:45. Amanda Domich had another strong finish in 37th place with a time of 22:06. Rachel Hansen (22:52), Sara Covert (23:02), Anna Hinterschied (23:05) and Courtney Tumpach (23:43) also contributed to the meet finish.
On the women coach Burns commented, "We continue to get better as a team each week. We did not have a great day today but we managed to battle and beat some good teams. This race shows our team that we can compete hard even when we are not feeling at our best. We are looking forward to two great weeks of training to prepare for the Horizon League meet - it will be a battle and we will be ready to roll."
