CHICAGO (May 5, 2005) - Loyola University Chicago (17-32) dropped both ends of a doubleheader at city rival DePaul (37-15) this afternoon, losing by scores of 4-3 and 8-0. Despite the loss, senior first baseman Allison Scanlin drove in her school-record 86th RBI in game one.
In game one, the Ramblers posted their most runs against the Blue Demons since 1996. Loyola jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning thanks to back-to-back doubles by Raven Gengler and Scanlin. Gengler's two-bagger drove home a pair of runs and Scanlin's double scored Gengler and set the Loyola career RBI record.
That lead would be shortlived however, as DePaul used consecutive home runs by Linda Secka (a two-run blast)Â and Kara Amundson to tie the contest at 3-3 in the bottom of the third. The game remained that way until the seventh inning when with two outs and runners on second and third, Sandy Vojik hit a grounder to shortstop, but Trish Oberhaus' throw sailed wide as Secka scored the winning run.
Scanlin went 2 for 2 with an RBI to lead the Loyola offense while Mia Pangere was again a hard-luck loser, striking out four and allowing only three earned runs.
In the nightcap, DePaul scored all the runs it would need with a three-run second, the big blow a two-run blast two center field by Marcy Wilus. Left-hander Megan Huitink kept the Rambler bats at bay, limiting Loyola to only two hits - one each by Tara Miller and Nora Schober.
Loyola returns to action this weekend for a three-game series at Cleveland State.
