No. 11 Ramblers Drop Carthage In MIVA Crossover, 3-0

KENOSHA, Wis. - Senior middle hitter Corey Kloos (Florissant, Mo.) posted a match-high 10 kills to go along with five blocks as No. 11 Loyola defeated host Carthage in three games (30-21, 30-19, 30-20) here at CC's Physical Education Center. With the win, Loyola improves to 6-0 on the season, while Carthage's record falls to 1-4.

In addition to Kloos, senior outside hitter Chris Nelson (Racine, Wis.) and junior middle blocker James Grunst (Milwaukee, Wis.) added nine kills for the Ramblers, while senior opposite hitter Chris Kozlarek (Evergreen Park, Ill.) tallied eight kills and five service aces. Junior setter Brian Gunli (St. Louis, Mo.) posted 33 assists and senior libero John Thuet (St. Louis, Mo.) recorded a match-best eight digs.

Loyola started off with an early 6-2 lead in the first stanza before a service ace from junior Shane Olsen brought Carthage to within two points at 7-5. The Maroon and Gold then produced an 18-11 run and increased its lead to 25-16 on a Grunst kill. The Ramblers scored four of the game's final six points to capture a 1-0 lead.

Carthage kicked off the second game with a 2-0 lead on sophomore T.J. Bellei's service ace and a block from juniors Ryan Thompson and Rob Koehler extended the Redmen's lead at 5-1. The Ramblers came back to lead 16-9 on a block from Kozlarek and Grunst. After the Redmen got to within 16-11, the Maroon and Gold received five consecutive service points from senior outside hitter Nathan Gustus (Mount Prospect, Ill.) to push its lead at 21-11. Nelson finished the game with another kill at game point with LU holding a 29-19 advantage. Both teams were neck and neck to start in the final game until the score was tied at 13-13 before the Ramblers took a 15-13 on a block from Grunst and Kozlarek. LU increased its lead to 23-16 on a Gustus service ace and used a 7-4 run to end the match.

Bellei's eight kills to lead Carthage, while Matt Ulmer recorded 14 assists and Koehler added three blocks (one solo, two assisted). The Ramblers posted a .360 hitting clip for the match and held the Redmen to a -.024 hitting percentage. Loyola also held advantages in kills (40-15), digs (27-21), blocks (9.0-5-0) and service aces (5-3).

The Ramblers host Mercyhurst in a MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division match on Friday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m.
