Four-Game Winning Streak Halted At Illinois-Chicago, 3-0

Box Score

CHICAGO - Junior Keily Zins had a team-high 11 kills but it was not enough as Illinois-Chicago handed Loyola a 3-0 (30-22, 30-24, 30-21) loss tonight in Horizon League action at the Flames Athletic Center. The setback snaps Loyola's four-match winning streak and sends the Ramblers to 11-11 (4-3 Horizon). UIC improves to 13-11 (6-1) with the win.

UIC jumped on Loyola right off the bat in game one, jumping out to an early 6-1 lead. A Courtney Ashley kill and a pair of UIC errors helped the Ramblers claw back within one (11-10) before four LU errors highlighted a six-point Flames run that extended the lead to 17-10 and put the Ramblers on their heels. A Dana VanDiggelen kill pulled Loyola within five, 26-21, but it would get no closer in dropping the first set.

Game two was tight in the early stages and LU used an ace from Shelby Henriksen and a UIC error to assume a 10-8 lead. A Sarah Elmer kill moments later helped the Ramblers extend to a 14-10 lead before the Flames came back, reeling off the next four points to even the frame. The teams traded points to 16-all before UIC made its move, ripping off six of the next seven points to claim a 22-17 lead and LU would get no closer than four points the rest of the way.

Loyola opened game three strong, and a Zins kill and an Ashley ace helped the Ramblers to an early 8-5 lead. Again, the lead proved to be short-lived, as UIC scored the next three to pull even and began to slowly edge its way to an 18-14 lead. Consecutive kills from Henriksen and Audrey Davis helped the Ramblers draw to within two (19-17) before the hosts pulled away for a 30-21 win to close out the match.

UIC's offensive efficiency was the story, as the Flames hit a sterling .302 for the match while holding the Ramblers to a .153 mark.

Zins narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with 11 kills and nine digs, while Ann Deelo led the defense with a match-high 15 digs. Katarina Nedeljkovic led the Flames with 17 kills.

Loyola takes the rest of the weekend off before starting the second half of the Horizon League season next weekend. The Ramblers open play Friday night (Oct. 20) at Butler.
