Loyola Drops Season Opener to Marquette

Aug. 25, 2006

Box Score

CHICAGO - Senior Matt Marek (Fox River Grove, Ill.) scored his fifth career goal in the middle of the second half but the Loyola men's soccer team had its six-game regular-season home win streak snapped in a 2-1 defeat to Marquette at Loyola Soccer Park tonight. Loyola had not met Marquette, its former conference foe, since 1990.

Marquette got a majority of its scoring chances early and converted two of them into goals. Marquette's Dan Addis wasted little time, scoring the first goal of the regular season 1:05 into the contest on a feed from Nick Kay.

The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 2-0 about 10 minutes later as Mike Klemm converted on a pass from Rob Walton at the 12:26 mark.

Down 2-0, Loyola began putting pressure on the Marquette defense that would hardly decrease throughout the match. The Ramblers gained a 4-3 advantage in first half shots as most of the action was on the Golden Eagle end of the field.

In the second half, the Loyola pressure and the scoring chances continued. The Ramblers finally converted a scoring chance Marek headed a right-side cross from sophomore Kevin Harrigan (Woodridge, Ill.) at the 70:39 mark to cut their deficit in half.

Loyola's pressure on the Marquette defense persisted after the score but the Golden Eagles were able to hang on for the victory.

Loyola plays its first road game of the season at DePaul Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m.
