CHICAGO - Loyola University Chicago head women's volleyball coach Marcie Bomhack has announced the hiring of Julie Wiejak as an assistant women's volleyball coach this afternoon. Wiejak replaces Lauren Mikos, who left the team last month to pursue opportunities outside volleyball.
"I am thrilled to welcome Julie Wiejak to the Loyola volleyball staff," said Bomhack. "Her passion and love for the game of volleyball and Loyola University are contagious to everyone she meets. She has incredible knowledge of the game and will help in training our middle blockers and in formulating our offensive strategies. Julie brings experience from every level of volleyball including her standout career here as a dean's list student and Most Valuable Player of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference Championship team."
Wiejak, a 2000 graduate of Loyola, returns to her alma mater on the bench after a record-setting playing career. During her time in Rogers Park, Wiejak totaled 678 kills from her middle blocker position and was a force at the net on defense, finishing her career with 91 solo blocks and 297 total blocks. She recorded a Loyola single-season record 135 blocks as a junior and was just as productive as a senior, compiling 342 kills and 125 blocks to lead the Ramblers to the 1999 MCC title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. She slammed 39 kills and added seven blocks over the last two rounds of the MCC Championship to earn MVP honors and also garnered First Team All-MCC honors.
Wiejak brings extensive coaching experience at all levels and has strong ties to the Chicagoland volleyball community. She served as an assistant coach at DePaul for six seasons and has been active with both the High Performance Program - an extension of the governing body of USA Volleyball - and Elite Volleyball School for the last five years.
A Chicago native and graduate of Bishop Noll High School, Wiejak was an exemplary student-athlete at Loyola, making the Dean's List all four years and earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication and Marketing. She went on to obtain a Master's degree in Business Communication from DePaul in 2006.
