QUINCY, Ill. - Significant contributions from many different players, including a pair of double-doubles, led the No. 12 Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball team to a convincing 3-0 win (30-24, 30-27, 30-22) against Quincy University Saturday night in Pepsi Arena.
Loyola (16-5, 5-3 MIVA Shondell/Dunlap) was led by setter Brian Guntli's second double-double performance in the last three matches. The senior from St. Louis, Mo. led the Rambler attack to a .337 hitting percentage with a match-high 35 assists and finished second on the team with 10 digs. Guntli registered 56 assists and 11 digs for his most recent double-double at home against Lewis last Tuesday and now has five such efforts this season.
Nathan Gustus turned in a versatile performance as well, with 10 kills on a .444 hitting percentage (10-2-18) and a match-high 11 digs for his third double-double of the season. The Mount Prospect, Ill. native has four in his career and most recently collected 13 kills and 15 digs against New Jersey Tech on March 3. The Ramblers have had 10 double-double performances through this season's 21 matches.
Sophomore Joe Guntli led the Ramblers on the attack with a match-high 13 kills and not only added four digs and two assists but also a match-high two service aces. Ian Anderson complemented Guntli with nine kills while middle blocker Nick Lamoureux had a team-high .500 hitting percentage (8-1-14) en route to eight kills.
Loyola made a statement in game one that last throughout the match. The Ramblers started off with a .375 conversion percentage on the attack in game one, compared to a .281 mark for Quincy and cruised to a 30-24 win. LU took both of the following games in similar fashion, out-hitting Quincy .355-.235 in game two and limiting the Hawks to just a .143 conversion percentage while clinching the match in game three.
The Ramblers managed a convincing win despite being outblocked 8-4. Grunst was the only Rambler with multiple blocks, collecting one solo and one assist for a team-high two blocks. Quincy's John Markendorf was credited with a match-high four blocks while three others collected three blocks apiece.
Quincy (4-17, 2-5 MIVA Shondell/Dunlap) was led by Ed Ryan and Peter Coley, who both registered eight kills apiece. Setter Eric Wooldridge coordinated the Hawk attack with a team-high 34 assists.
Loyola continues plays MIVA Coleman Division opponent MSOE at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Milwaukee, Wis.
