Final Stats

Cleveland, Ohio - Juniors Jackie Vera and Julie Colhoff scored just over three minutes apart in the first half and Cynthia Morote-Ariza assisted on all three goals as Loyola knocked off Cleveland State, 3-0, in a contentious match this afternoon in Cleveland, Ohio. Loyola gets back to the .500 mark, improving to 7-7 (3-0 Horizon) while Cleveland State dips to 4-7-1 (0-2-1).

Cleveland State came out physical, with 19 total fouls between the two teams in the first 30 minutes. However, Loyola was undaunted and opened the scoring six minutes later when Morote-Ariza set up Vera who blasted a 15-yard shot off the near post and in for her sixth goal of the year. Another Cleveland State foul minutes later cost the Vikings a second goal, as Julie Colhoff beat her mark to head in a long Morote-Ariza free kick to make it 2-0 after 39 minutes.

Loyola put the match away early in the second half, as Vera and Morote-Ariza combined to set up Laura Trevillian, the sophomore scoring for the sixth time in seven matches, as LU went up 3-0 in the 58th minute. The game got chippy from there, with six cards shown - five to Cleveland State, including the dismissal of one of its coaches - over the final half hour.

The Ramblers enjoyed the better of play, outshooting the Vikings 13-5 for the match. Freshman keeper Katie Groesch made three saves to notch the shutout, extending LU's streak of not allowing a goal in the run of play to 360 minutes. Wright State did manage to score once last Sunday on a penalty kick.

For Morote-Ariza, it was another solid performance against Cleveland State. Last season, Morote-Ariza scored all three LU goals in a 3-0 win, today setting up all three to run her season total to a NCAA-leading 14 for the year.

Loyola wraps up a busy stretch with a rare Tuesday night match. The Ramblers will be aiming for their fifth straight win when they host Green Bay at 7 p.m. at Loyola Soccer Park.
