Loyola Stumbles To 53-47 Loss To UIC

Jan. 10, 2009

Box Score

CHICAGO - Keisha Collins poured in a game-high 17 points but visiting UIC used a 14-4 second half run and held off the Ramblers in a 53-47 win this afternoon at the Gentile Center. Loyola drops to 5-8 (0-3 Horizon) while UIC improves to 9-4 (3-0).

Points were hard to come by all day but Loyola managed to rattle off six straight early on to grab a 9-8 lead after six minutes. UIC scored the next six to regain the lead but buckets from Collins and Brittany Boeke and a pair of Lisa Samplawski free throws gave LU the lead back (15-14) with just under seven minutes left in the period. After the teams traded baskets, UIC managed to outscore the Ramblers 9-4 over the final 5:30 to take a 25-21 lead into intermission. Neither team could get much going on the offensive end as Loyola hit just 7 of 22 from the floor (31%) and the Flames connected on just 11 of 33 (33%).

Two Elyse VanBogaert hoops sandwiched a Cassie Johnson basket as the Ramblers closed to within a deuce early in the second half. However, UIC three Meghan Hutchens baskets highlighted the game-changing 12-4 spurt that gave the Flames a 41-29 lead at the 11:46 mark. Loyola responded immediately, using a pair of Maggie McCloskey three-pointers in a 9-2 response that made it a 43-38 game with 6:34 left. Despite getting within four on a couple of occasions down the stretch, the Ramblers could not get over the hump and UIC was able to make enough free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

Once again, the battle of the boards proved to be decisive, as UIC owned a 44-27 edge on the glass, including 24 offensive rebounds that led to 16 points. In addition, the Flames owned a 38-18 edge in the paint that helped offset a strong Loyola defensive effort that limited them to 36% shooting, including a 1-for-14 effort from the arc.

Collins finished with 17 points, four rebounds and three steals to lead the Ramblers and was joined in double figures by McCloskey (12 points) and VanBogaert (10).

Loyola hits the road for its yearly swing through Indiana next week, beginning with a Thursday evening game at Butler.
