Youngstown State Drops Loyola, 3-0

Oct. 23, 2009

Box Score

CHICAGO - Youngstown State took control early and never let up in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-20) win over Loyola tonight at Alumni Gym. The Ramblers slide to 10-14 (3-8 Horizon) while Youngstown State improves to 7-14 (5-6).

The Penguins took it to the Ramblers from the opening serve, racing out to a 7-2 lead in the opening set. Back-to-back kills from Dana VanDiggelen stemmed the tide and a VanDiggelen/Mallory Curran block later pulled Loyola within two, 8-6. Youngstown State was able to push the margin back out to five but LU fought back again, getting within 18-16 after a Curran kill and a Penguin error. However, that would be as close as Loyola would get, as YSU scored seven of the last eight points to take the opening set, 25-17.

Youngstown State raced out to a 6-3 in the second set and Loyola was again forced to play from behind. The Ramblers pulled within 7-6 on a YSU error but the Penguins were, again, able to slowly push out their lead, taking a 17-11 lead on a Ruth Bascaljon block. Loyola trailed 23-15 before finally stringing some points together, rattling off four in succession, two coming on VanDiggelen kills, before Youngstown was able to side-out and eventually close out a 25-20 win with a Brittany Grove kill.

Loyola came out of intermission with more energy and a solo stuff from Curran gave the home team an 8-4 lead. However, the Penguins scored the next four points to pull even and rattled off 10 straight points later in the frame on the service of Laurie Shives to take a commanding 20-11 lead. Kills from Curran and Karen Sueppel helped the Ramblers get back within three (23-20) but it was too little, too late and two Kaitlin O'Hara kills wrapped up the match.

Curran led the way for Loyola with eight kills and five blocks. Senior libero Alyse Serritella recorded a match-high 18 digs to pace the LU defense.

The Ramblers take the rest of the weekend off and return to the court next Friday night (Oct. 30) when they tangle with Horizon League leaders Cleveland State. First serve from Alumni Gym is set for 7 p.m.
