CHICAGO - The Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team played Horizon League rival Butler to a double-overtime, scoreless draw on Friday night (Oct. 2). The Ramblers (3-2-3, 0-1-2 Horizon League) and Bulldogs (6-1-1, 2-0-1) combined for just four shots on goal on a cold and rainy night at Loyola Soccer Park.
The Ramblers had several quality scoring chances throughout the scoreless contest. In the first half, junior Willie Koss fired a shot from 25 yards out that was corralled by Butler goalkeeper Fabian Knopfler, who had to lunge to his left to keep the ball out of the net.
With less than a minute left in regulation play, senior Michael Ferguson blasted a shot from the top of the box, only to be denied by the crossbar. Sophomore Eric Marofske retrieved the rebound, but sent a shot over the net to end the scoring chance.
"I thought we played well tonight," said Loyola head coach Brendan Eitz. "We created quite a few chances and we were a little unlucky in the end."
Loyola and Butler combined for 33 fouls and eight yellow cards in a physical match between league foes. Sophomore goalkeeper Peter McKeown tallied two saves in his fourth shutout of the season.
"Our guys deserve a better result than a draw. We'll look forward from here and get ready for Maryland next week."
The Ramblers head east to take on the nationally-ranked Terrapins on Tuesday (Oct. 6) at 6:30 p.m. CT.
