Loyola vs. San Francisco
December 12, 2009
Loyola Head Coach Jim Whitesell
Opening statement
"I really think it's a great win for our guys. Give San Francisco a lot of credit. This is a team that would just not go away. When you play anyone out of that league, and we talked about this with our guys, we have an incredible amount of respect for them. Our guys watched the tape yesterday in practice and we really knew that we had our hands full against a very good team. We're happy with the win. It certainly got exciting there at the end, but these guys (Geoff McCammon and Andy Polka) did a great job. You had better take every one you can get and appreciate it."
On San Francisco forward Dior Lowhorn's play
"He's really outstanding. You can see why he was a Mid-Major All-American and put his name into the NBA Draft last year. Andy (Polka) can attest to that. I think Andy did a nice job on him. But he is just a hoss. I'm glad we only play them once. He's really an excellent player."
On playing against fellow Jesuit schools
"That's one thing that really motivated the guys, when I told them, `this one's for the '49 guys who lost in the NIT title game. It really is a neat history that both the schools have. Obviously one of the things I was happy to see was that we had a good crowd today. One of the things they asked me when I took the job here was, `when are you going to play Jesuit schools?' In our non-conference this season we've played three of them and they're all pretty much from a distance. It's nice that this year we ended up with a 3-0 record in non-conference against them."
Loyola senior forward Andy Polka
On the team's attitude
"I think we want to be the toughest team every night out when we're on the floor. That's number one. We never want to beat ourselves, I mean look at our assists to turnovers. That's what we're always looking for. We want to have less than 12 turnovers and we did that tonight. I think every night we come out here we want to be the toughest team. We do some toughness drills in practice, so those get us ready. We're always ready to play hard."
Loyola junior guard Geoff McCammon
On leading the team in scoring with 21 points
"Coach always says just run the offense and my shots will come. When you have guys like Andy (Polka), Andy's a great post passer, Courtney (Stanley) and Terrance (Hill), they'll find people. It's just running the offense like Coach says. I got my open shots and I just took them."
