BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. - The Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team fell to Saint Louis, 3-1, at Toyota Park on Saturday night (Sept. 12). The Ramblers (1-1-1) and Billikens (2-2-0) played over 65 minutes of scoreless soccer before SLU broke into the scoring column for the first of its three goals.
The 2,211 fans in attendance set a school record for attendance at a soccer match.
"I want to thank everyone for putting on this event," said Loyola head coach Brendan Eitz. "Everyone involved did an awesome job. It was great to have the student body represented in the crowd too."
A physical first half resulted in zeroes on the scoreboard with only three shots on goal combined between the two teams. Senior Alex Jones fired a shot off of the crossbar in the seventh minute, while a shot from Stephen Bortolon deflected off of the post 12 minutes later to round out the teams' best opportunities of the half.
SLU broke the tie in the 65th minute, when Nick Maglasang retrieved a deflection inside the Ramblers' 18-yard box, sending a shot into the top-left corner of the net. The Billikens tallied again 22 minutes later, when Mike Roach charged into the box before placing a shot just inside the right post for the score.
Loyola got on the board less than a minute later when a deflection off of a header from a SLU defender bounced into the Billikens' goal, cutting their lead to 2-1.
Roach netted his second goal of the night in the 90th minute, lofting a shot over a charging Peter McKeown, giving SLU the 3-1 lead.
"It was a great night for a soccer game," Eitz said. "We just didn't finish on opportunities we had early on. If a couple of the shots that hit the post or the crossbar go in, it makes for a different game."
The Billikens' goal in the 65th minute ended McKeown's season-opening scoreless streak, which he extended to 264:43 before the goal.
Loyola will be back in action next Friday (Sept. 18) when the Ramblers travel to Kansas City, Mo., to take on UMKC at the UMKC Invitational. The match is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. CT.
