Loyola vs. Detroit
January 2, 2010
Loyola Head Coach Jim Whitesell
Opening statement
"The beginning of the second half was not good for us. We tried to make a few adjustments offensively and also be more assertive. They really just took it to us. They got the ball where they wanted to and we didn't. We didn't get into our offense, and after a while that wears on you in terms of your defensive performance. What I was disappointed with was that our defensive performance in the second half wasn't what we needed it to be. This team has been very resilient and I thought we kind of dropped our guard a little bit there. Give Detroit credit - you can see that's an awfully talented team. That team is very well coached, the guys are really athletic and long, and obviously (Eli) Holman really bothered us inside. We knew they were very good, so we have a lot of respect for them. It's just a tough loss."
On matching up with Detroit
"They make everything happen off of their defensive end, so you have to run quality offense. Fast break points were at 16-2, so that kind of tells you that you can't line them up in half-court man-to-man, it's more the ability to spread back. A lot of that was coming off of a blocked shot, a turnover or maybe a well-guarded shot. We've been a good rebounding team all year and tonight I don't think we rebounded well at all. I thought we were very disappointing. I thought that we were not as disciplined against a team that has so many long and athletic guys."
Loyola Junior Guard Terrance Hill
On the team's play in the second half
"Things kind of turned when it was at the 11-minute mark and we were within two. They just kept making runs and getting lay-ups. We didn't come out in the second half nearly as aggressively as we did in the first half, and that's kind of where they made some separation."
Loyola Senior Forward Andy Polka
On Detroit's aggressive play
"They're one of the more physical, athletic teams (in the Horizon League), and you can't help out a team like that. It snowballed when we had those turnovers and we just never got back into it. We were pretty much their best friends tonight. We can't do that with a team like that."
