CHICAGO- With just over a minute left in the second and final overtime session, Milwaukee's Riley Weiner netted a shot to the far post past Loyola University Chicago goalkeeper Peter McKeown to give the Panthers a 1-0 double-overtime win over the Ramblers on Senior Day at Loyola Soccer Park.
The loss marks Loyola's first defeat against a Horizon League opponent this season, moving the squad to 3-1-1 in the conference and 3-7-2 overall. With the victory, Milwaukee improves to 4-6-2 (3-3-0) in 2010. The Panthers are now 19-3-1 all-time against the Ramblers.
Despite pushing the ball early into Milwaukee territory, the Ramblers couldn't connect on nine first half shots. The backline held the Panthers in check, allowing just two opening half shots.
In the second half, the offensive output switched hands.
The visitors outshot Loyola 9-4 in the second frame, but neither team found the back of the net in regulation. As a result, the game moved into overtime.
After trading three shots a piece in the first extra session, Milwaukee attempted the lone shot in the second overtime frame. The only shot, though, ended the contest.
At the 108th minute, Weiner fired a dagger from just outside the Loyola box and scored to stop the contest at 1-0. Edison Crespo earned the assist on Milwaukee's game-winning goal.
With 16 team shots on the evening, Loyola picked up strong efforts from Eric Nock and Chris Mills, as both Ramblers picked up three shots on Saturday. McKeown made many keep stops in the game, adding six saves.
The men's soccer team will play its final regular season home match on Wednesday, October 20 against Big Ten opponent Northwestern. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. CST.
