Valparaiso 66, Loyola 56

Loyola Head Coach Jim Whitesell
Opening Statement
"I'm really disappointed in the way we played. You have to give a lot of credit to Valpo. I think they are one of the better teams. This team last year finished fourth and they had the majority of their team back. We certainly have great respect for them. I thought defensively at times we played very well, but offensively we were really poor. We took poor shots. We didn't make free throws. We didn't finish plays. We didn't get second shots. We got impatient. We took really hard shots. Give them a lot of credit. They made us work a lot. I thought they were really efficient. Offensively, we had a one point lead with 13 minutes left in the game and they punched us right back, which is what good teams do. We played frustrated and in games like these you have to play really well and play better than that especially on your home court."
On whether there was a hangover from the Butler game on Wednesday night
" No. No a hangover at all. We had two days off. They knew exactly what was going on. Practice-wise we went light. There are no excuses whatsoever there. There is going to be a hangover every night in this league. This league is that good."
On free throw shooting
"I don't know, we have been shooting it well. It was one of those nights we couldn't make any of them. And you have to make a few of those when you're struggling to stay around. Instead of being down six, get it down to two or four. We never did that. We went up there and clanked a bunch. And our good free throw shooters need to get to the line."
Loyola sophomore forward Ben Averkamp
On whether the team was a step slow today
"I don't think we were a step slow. They got a few offensive rebounds and we weren't able to do anything with our offensive rebounds, especially at the end of the game. It's a four-point game, then because we were not making free throws or finishing off possessions, all of a sudden it's a 10-point game."
